In a recent shocking news, two trainee teachers from Sarawak were reported that they’ve lost their lives in a kayaking incident in Kedah. To no surprise, the news of the pair’s death has drawn widespread attention.

Kayaking activity causes death of 2 trainee teachers

The victims were identified as 21-year-old Christopher Ling and 20-year-old Joey Ling. Both were believed to have run into difficulty while kayaking, after encountering rough waters. Initial reports suggest their kayak may have become entangled in a fisherman’s net during the incident, before capsizing.

Several other kayaks were reported to have capsized during the activity, though those involved were safely rescued. The bodies of both victims were recovered at approximately 7.30pm, about two and a half hours after the incident, he added.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Post-mortem examinations have confirmed that both victims died from drowning. Their families have since been notified and are now able to claim the bodies to make arrangements for the respective funeral rites.

Breach of regulations or a tragic accident?

Following the incident, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency revealed that it had not received prior notification about the activity. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has launched an internal probe into the training institute involved to determine whether any regulations were breached.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh also expressed his condolences, describing the pair as promising future educators. He also said the ministry would extend assistance to their families and arrange counselling support for those affected by the incident.

“This is a significant loss, as we have lost two dedicated individuals who were preparing to enter the teaching profession,” he said.

Family members of both victims have since travelled to Kedah to pay their final respects. According to local reports, an emotional scene unfolded as Joey Ling’s mother called out for her daughter, overcome with grief after meeting with authorities.
