What was supposed to be an ordinary payday turned into a life changing lesson in honesty for a Malaysian worker in 2004.
At the time, Ryan was working at a theme park and earning around RM1,700 a month. When he headed to an ATM to check if his salary had been credited, he immediately realised something was wrong. Instead of seeing his usual pay, his account showed a balance that was far higher than expected.

Instead of the RM1,700 he was expecting, a staggering RM17,000 had been deposited into his account. He checked his balance several times, convinced it had to be a mistake, before realising an extra zero had somehow been added.
Rather than treating it as a lucky windfall, he chose to do the right thing. The very next day, he went to the bank and returned the entire amount.
He thought that would be the end of it. But the following morning, he received an emotional phone call that revealed just how much his honesty had meant.
A costly mistake
A young bank officer called in tears, repeatedly thanking the employee for returning the money.
She later explained that she had accidentally added the extra zero while processing the salary transfer. Had the money not been returned, she could have been held responsible for the loss. At the time, bank officers reportedly earned between RM1,500 and RM2,000 a month, meaning the mistaken payment was close to her entire year’s salary.

More than just money
In the end, the incident was never just about returning RM15,698. It was about protecting someone’s livelihood, sparing them from a mistake that could have cost them their career, and giving them a chance to move forward without that burden.
A few days later, the bank sent Ryan a letter of appreciation. More than 20 years on, he still keeps it as a reminder of that day, not because it holds any monetary value, but because it represents a choice he has never regretted.
His story is a powerful reminder that integrity is measured by the decisions we make when no one is watching. While honesty does not always come with an immediate reward, the peace of mind that follows is often worth far more than any amount of money.
